About Us
Our Story
Capero was born out of frustration—the frustration of not understanding languages. The inspiration for Capero's system came during a university class where Mehdi had difficulty understanding the teacher's accent. This led to demotivation. Mehdi stopped attending classes and fell behind schedule. Then, in a moment of inspiration 💡... What if you added subtitles to the video? So Mehdi got to work and tried to create a system that would add subtitles to any video, allowing him to rewatch previous lectures and follow along with accurate subtitles. This innovative solution was the first step in Capero’s journey.
You might wonder, how does this story lead to Capero's videos with closed captions for the deaf and hard of hearing (DHH)? First, we looked at language barriers. If it's difficult to understand someone speaking your own language with an unfamiliar accent, imagine how hard it must be when the other person speaks a different language. In that case, understanding the video becomes nearly impossible. But translation is much more than just converting words. There's specific cultural context that can get lost during translation. So we built a system that could subtitle videos in any language and translate them into your own language. This is how Capero's translation component came to be. At Capero, we envision a world where video is accessible to everyone, regardless of hearing ability, language proficiency, or cultural background.
But wait... You didn't explain why Capero focuses on the deaf and hard of hearing... Hold on, we're getting there.
These days, most videos have some form of subtitles. However, audio in videos is much more than just plain text. We learned this through our experience with translation. When you remove the audio, videos can feel flat because you're forced to rely solely on the subtitles. Today, AI enables so much more, especially in the field of accessibility. We want to make audio in videos as accessible as possible. The people who struggle most with audio are those who have difficulty hearing it. We want to make a meaningful impact on the people around us. The topic of audio accessibility drew us in, which is why we pivoted to making video content accessible for the deaf and hard of hearing.
Our mission is to streamline communication, foster inclusivity, and enhance comprehension. At Capero, we are dedicated to creating a world where people can truly understand one another.
